What is Mechanical Engineering ?

Mechanical engineering is the study of the principles of force, energy, and motion. Mechanical engineers play a dominant role in enhancing general safety, economic vitality, and overall quality of living. Every aspect of life is touched by Mechanical Engineering. If something moves or uses energy, a Mechanical Engineer was probably involved in its design or production. They design, analyze, and manufacture the machines and systems used by modern society. Here is a short list of some products, devices and systems that Mechanical Engineers have helped to develop: automobiles, aircraft, robots, power plants, heating and cooling systems, solar energy devices, computer hardware and software, space vehicles, home appliances, micromachines, specialized industrial machinery and artificial limbs!

Mechanical Engineering Department @ Madhav :

The faculty members are grouped under four broad specializations - Design, Manufacturing , Energy, Thermal & Fluids Engineering. They have been engaged in research in all the classical areas of Mechanical Engineering and upcoming areas too. The academic activities are supported by 15 laboratories. The Department has decided recently to focus major research efforts in the different areas of mechanical engineering. There are currently 10 ongoing projects, of which 06 are major. The faculty has been active in offering consultancy services to industries and conduct courses regularly to facilitate the continuing education of practicing engineers.

The Mechanical Engineering Dept at Madhav University is one of the largest in terms of faculty, students, and activities, continues to lead and expand its activities in various directions. The Department is known for research and projects in robotics, fluid dynamics, heat pumps, nuclear engineering, fracture mechanics, I. C. Engines, Combustion, CAD-CAM and other areas. Experimental and computational facilities are being continuously upgraded. Industry interaction has been increased with several postgraduate courses being offered to industry participants, and many students working in industry-sponsored projects.

Department also houses an institute central facility on Rapid Prototyping. The department is very well equipped with computational facilities and resources both in terms of hardware and software. Department has computing systems and workstations loaded with wide range of software products covering all areas of mechanical engineering.

Mechanical Engineering is a very broad discipline. Consequently, Mechanical engineers are typically found engaged in a diverse range of activities including machine design and analysis, product development, plant design, basic and applied research, environmental control, manufacturing, robotics, and technical sales. Mechanical engineers are employed by virtually every industry that uses engineers such as public utilities, aerospace, consumer products, computers, bioengineering, food processing, automotive, or materials to name some examples. Some people earn a mechanical engineering degree, and then use their broad technical background to pursue graduate studies and careers in other fields such as business, law, or medicine.

About the Department

Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and most popular streams in engineering. It is the branch of engineering that deals with moving machines and their components. A central principle of mechanical engineering is the control of energy: transferring it from one form to another to suit a specific demand. Car engines, for example, convert chemical energy into kinetic energy.

The department is vibrant with several activities round the year since 2013. The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers Diploma, B. Tech., M. Tech. and Ph.D. degree programs. Subsequently, in year 2015 M. Tech. courses were started in Thermal Engineering, Machine Design, Renewable Energies and Production Engineering. The department also started registration of candidates for Ph.D, program from year 2016. Over the years the department has nurtured young minds to produce bright Mechanical Engineers. Many of our faculty members and students are involved in research activities in various areas of Mechanical Engineering. Various lab facilities are also provided to the students. The labs in department are Thermal Engineering Lab, Fluid Mechanics Lab, Engineering Workshop Lab, Strength of Material Lab, Dynamics of Machine Lab, Production Engineering Lab and Material Science Lab.

Educational Objectives

Mechanical Engineering Programs are designed to prepare students for continued learning and successful careers in industry, government, academia and consulting. Our alumni are expected to:

  • Apply their engineering knowledge, critical thinking and problem solving skills in professional engineering practice or in non engineering fields, such as law, medicine or business.

Courses running under the department

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering: It is a 3-year course which students can pursue after the completion of 10 years of school education. Diploma holders are eligible for lateral entry to the third semester Engineering Courses.
  • B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering: Bachelor of Technology (⦁ B.Tech) in mechanical engineering is the 4-year full-time undergraduate course in engineering. This course can be done with one of the engineering discipline. Prerequisites for pursuing B.Tech is 10+2 passed with ⦁ PCM group from the recognized educational board.
  • M. Tech in Mechanical Engineering: with specialization in Machine Design, Renewable Energy, Production Engineering and Thermal Engineering: Postgraduate course in engineering resulting in the award of a Master of Engineering (M.E.) or Master of Technology (⦁ M.Tech) degree. It is a 2-years course that one can pursue after completing a 4-year undergraduate program in engineering (B.Tech).
